The charitable Bertelsmann Stiftung, founded by Reinhard Mohn in 1977, works on an operational level. Its goal is to promote social change. To achieve this, it takes action in Germany, but also internationally in the fields of social development, education, health, employment, culture and integration. Bertelsmann Stiftung holds a majority shareholding in Bertelsmann AG and is one of the largest operational foundations in Europe with an annual budget volume of approx. 65 million euros. The controlling of Bertelsmann Stiftung focuses on encouraging the effective management of resources and at the same time documenting the charitable use of funds. Essener Verkehrs-AG (EVAG) moves 300,000 passengers daily, making it one of the largest providers of local transportation in the western Ruhr region. True to the motto "Wir bewegen Essen" (We get Essen moving), around 1,800 employees ensure that passengers have access to friendly, cost-efficient mobility. EVAG manages their operational business processes with SAP R/3. However, the transaction-oriented platform is not adequate for handling the analytical controlling tasks. An OLAP solution that was originally used, a combination of the TM1 database and Microsoft Excel, was no longer able to handle the increasing demands of reporting. As a result, the existing solution was to be replaced with a controlling platform that is also capable e.g. of handling growing data volumes and presenting qualitative information.

In 2008, PHOENIX Dichtungstechnik was split off of the Continental Group as the result of a management buy-out. With 300 employees and annual sales of 72 million euro, the company operates in the areas of elastomer profiles and roof waterproofing. The production sites and offices are located in Hamburg and Waltershausen with sales offices in England, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. With respect to the manufacturing of its high-quality special products, the newly created company draws on the decades of experience of its predecessor Phoenix AG and Contitech AG. With respect to the internal structures, however, PHOENIX Dichtungstechnik planned to re-establish itself with a modern organisation and an ultra-modern IT landscape. On 1 January 2009, the young company began to replace, from the ground up, the SAP environment of the Continental Group and re-establish the entire IT landscape: hardware, servers, ERP and BI solution etc. should be selected in their entirety within six months and re-implimented.
